Anaesthesia and Analgesia

The UQ anaesthesia and analgesia team is Dr Jo Rainger, Dr Wendy Goodwin, Dr Brenda Dixon, Dr Oriana Marchetti, Dr Nick Cowling (resident), rotating interns and our Anaesthesia nurses Trish Farry and Moira Sheppard.

UQ VETS are unique in that our team of dedicated veterinary anaesthetists work within the teaching hospital to perform anaesthesia, analgesia and after care for all animals who undergo sedation and general anaesthesia for a procedure.  Each of our patients has a member of the anaesthesia team dedicated solely to their individual anaesthetic and pain management.  We work closely with the other services such as surgery, internal medicine, radiography and cardiology to ensure the best possible care for each of the patients in our care.

Our experienced team is innovative and highly skilled at providing the safest possible anaesthetic experience for each of our patients.  UQ VETS has both dedicated small animal and large animal hospitals and facilities where we are able to safely and effectively anaesthetise many different species including horses, farm animals, dogs, cats, birds, exotics and native wildlife.  Additionally, in order to provide the highest standard of care we have comprehensive equipment for delivering and monitoring anaesthesia.

Our team is trained in all aspects of veterinary pain management and our goal is to provide pain management tailored to each animal’s specific need. We have the capacity to design pain management protocols that include the constant delivery of analgesics, local and regional anaesthetic blocks and other state-of-the-art pain management techniques to ensure comfort and quality pain management before, during and after your animal’s procedure.

Our team also has an active interest in continuing professional education and research.  We regularly speak at domestic and international conferences and seminars about current topics of interest in veterinary anaesthesia and analgesia and present our resent research findings as well as publishing the results in peer reviewed journals.

If you have any questions for our team please feel free to contact us.
