Services
Consultations with the General Practice Service can be made directly by calling our helpful receptionists at the UQ Vets Small Animal Hospital who will organise an appointment to suit your needs.
Our appointments are usually between half an hour and 45 minute consultations to ensure that we attend to all of your pet’s needs. As a veterinary teaching hospital, final year veterinary students are routinely involved in consultations and procedures under the close supervision of our dedicated, experienced General Practice staff.
Health Examinations
- New Animal Health Examination
Purchasing a new companion can be challenging. Is your new pet healthy? What should he or she eat? How do you provide optimal care? What training do you need to provide? All of these questions can be answered in a ‘New Animal Health Examination’. During your visit, our vets carry out a detailed physical examination, discuss recommended vaccination and parasite prevention regimes, and provide advice on diet, behaviour, microchipping and desexing.
- Annual Health Examination
We recommend an annual health examination to monitor your pet’s health and facilitate early identification of any health problems that may not yet be visible to you. Your pet’s requirements will change as they mature from young animals to maturity, and we can provide you with advice to ensure we support your pet’s health through its various life stages. A thorough physical examination and age-appropriate laboratory tests can ensure that these requirements are been met, giving your pet a long and comfortable life.
- General Consultations
We offer general consults for a range of medical, surgical or dermatological conditions, and have the ability to offer internal referral to one of our specialist teams if needed. If you think your pet is ill or has sustained an injury, our vets will work with you and your pet to obtain a diagnosis and start the appropriate treatment. We have access to cutting edge diagnostic equipment, a dedicated anaesthesia team, and a range of veterinary specialists, and together we will ensure your pet will be afforded the very best care. The types of cases we routinely see include but is not limited to: skin diseases, eye problems, ear infections, lameness, weight management, and gastrointestinal upsets.
Behaviour Consultations
Our team of general practice vets will be able to work with you to discuss training and management of various behavioral problems that you may experience with your pet. In some cases, we may recommend referral to specialist veterinary behaviourists or involve accredited behavioural trainers to ensure the problem behaviour is managed promptly and appropriately.
Preventive Health & Dental Consults
We will discuss with you the various preventative health measures that are important in keeping your pet safe and healthy. These include but are not limited to:
- Vaccinations - important for preventing your pet from catching or succumbing to potentially life-threatening diseases
- Heartworm prevention
- Intestinal worming
- Flea and tick prevention
- Diet - we will discuss with your our dietary recommendations for the different life stages of your pet and to meet specific requirements of your pet
- Dental Consultations - our team will discuss with you various measures to maintain good dental health in your pets and will assess your pets need for dental procedures such as a clean and polish, teeth removal or referral to specialist veterinary dentists for more advanced procedures
